The Future of Care in Lac du Bonnet

The new Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home will bring 95 long-term care beds to the community, replacing the existing 30-bed home and adding 65 new beds to help meet the needs of residents and families across the region.
Scheduled for completion in fall 2027, the new home also represents something else: opportunity. What’s Being Built?
The two-storey, 84,300-square-foot facility will include 95 resident spaces organized into eight smaller, self-sufficient households. Seven households will include 12 standard resident bedrooms, while one will include nine standard bedrooms and two bariatric bedrooms.
Each household will have its own dedicated kitchen, dining and living areas, creating smaller communities within the larger home where residents can gather, share meals and spend their days in comfortable, familiar surroundings.
The new facility will replace the community’s existing 30-bed personal care home, resulting in 65 net new long-term care beds for Lac du Bonnet. It will be owned and operated by Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority.
Why It’s Needed
For residents and families, more long-term care beds mean greater capacity to provide care close to home and within the community people already know.
For Lac du Bonnet, the new home is also an investment in the future of local healthcare. A home nearly four times the size of the existing facility will need people to care for residents, prepare meals, create meaningful recreation opportunities, maintain the building, provide clinical care and keep the many pieces of daily life running smoothly.
That creates an opportunity to grow healthcare careers right here in the community.
Project Timeline
Construction site preparation began in December 2024, followed by excavation in February 2025. Procurement continued through winter 2026, with critical construction work, including masonry, structural steel and concrete, forming the foundation for the project’s continued development.
Construction is scheduled for completion in fall 2027.
Residents of the existing Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home will be the first to move in, approximately eight weeks after turnover. Additional residents will then move into the home in phases through late 2027 and early 2028 as additional households open and after assessments and approvals have been completed for individuals with care needs that meet the eligibility criteria.

Assiniboine College's Comprehensive Health Care Aide certificate prepares students to provide hands-on care and support in settings including personal care homes, hospitals and home care. The program is coming directly to Lac du Bonnet in early 2027, making it possible for local and area residents to train closer to home while preparing for a career in healthcare.

Red River College Polytechnic Health Care Aide Training:
The certificate program prepares students to support patients, personal care home residents and home care clients with their physical, emotional and social needs and activities of daily living. Training combines classroom learning and practical skills with hands-on clinical experience in healthcare settings.

Follow the Progress
The future Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home is already taking shape. Construction began with site preparation in December 2024 and excavation in February 2025. The project has since moved through procurement and into major construction, with superstructure work including masonry, structural steel and concrete among the critical components of the build.
Construction is scheduled for completion in fall 2027.
Once construction is complete in fall 2027, there will still be important work happening behind the scenes before the doors officially open. The Interlake-Eastern RHA team will spend the following weeks preparing the new home, orienting staff and making sure everything is ready to safely welcome residents and their families.
Residents currently living at Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home will be the first to make the move, expected to settle into their new home approximately eight weeks after construction is complete. From there, the remaining households will open gradually, welcoming new residents through late 2027 and into early 2028, after assessments and approvals have been completed for individuals with care needs that meet the eligibility criteria.
By early 2028, the new 95-bed personal care home will be fully coming to life, not simply as a new building, but as a new home for residents and a new workplace for a growing Lac du Bonnet healthcare team!
